I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.
This book is worthwhile even if you never plan to do much more than stroll through your neighborhood while still providing useful information for experienced distance runners. The book lives up to its subtitle, treating running as a total body experience. Gaudette breaks down the components that go into becoming and remaining a healthy, injury free runner and does so with specific, detailed suggestions and excellent illustrations. Many of the stretches and strength building activities he recommends are exactly the same ones that my physical therapist recommended for me after a non-running related injury. The stretches and activities can easily be done in a home or outdoor setting and do not require specialized equipment (other than high quality running shoes). The bulk of the book is devoted to stretching, strengthening, and proper running technique and the final section brings this all together with plans that are tailored to a variety of fitness levels and goals. The activities within each plan are consistent with the emphasis on total body training and injury prevention. I have begun to do one of the plans (plans range from 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the runner’s goals) and am finding it well laid out and simple to follow.

I was able to pre-read a copy of Jeff’s book. I have taken part in his training programs in the past and like that they are based on science rather than popular trends and the book continues that effort. Great for a beginner who wants to understand the sport and build a good running and strength training foundation and for those of us who have been at it a while to be sure we understand the science and are doing all we need to in order have resilient injury free bodies. Because we all know it is no fun to take time outs for injury from doing what we love.

  3. MKH (verified owner)

This book is written for people who have never run, or who have attempted to run and quickly and frequently got injured. Like a lot of people, I started running to lose weight. I figured that we were all born to run, we started running as soon as 2 or 3 years of age, so I figured that it must come naturally. Six weeks later I was injured and the injury stayed for months.

Jeff Gaudette has laid out the process of running injury free in this book step by step. The book provides warm-up and cool-down exercises to keep the muscles working properly, a guide to understanding good running form, some simple tests to evaluate your running posture, and running drills to improve one’s running form.

Strength training is key to running strong. The book covers strength training for every muscle used in running, and all of the exercises can be done with minimal gear. Doing so, he sets the new runner up for success. The book contains great photos of how to do the strength exercises in your home, and while reading the book, I tested most of the exercises.

The book provides just enough of the science of running for a new runner to know what to do, without getting into the technical details that may confuse the runner. Gaudette also touches briefly on the mental aspect of running, and how to keep motivated when life gets crazy and you don’t feel you have the time to run and be healthy. New research shows that the mental side of running is just as important as the physical in meeting goals. By keeping this book simple and clear, a new runner will have the information they need to become the runner they want to be, without getting mired in details.

Most helpful is that the author has developed training plans for all levels of runners and distances and incorporates the strength training in each schedule. Having a reminder of what exercises to do and when to do them in the schedule is a godsend. Dealing with injuries is never fun, and this book gives the new runner the tools to stay strong and healthy. I wish I had a book like this when I was a new runner. It would have saved me much time in becoming the strong runner I

I was fortunate to get a preview copy of this book from the publisher. It is a lovely compilation of useful training information for runners, presented in a format that is easy to read and digest. Particularly useful are the stretching and strength routines which are realistic for the everyday busy runner that is looking to incorporate additional work for the benefit of performance and injury prevention. The exercises are easy to follow thanks to clear directions and illustrations. I would recommend this book, written by a very knowledgeable coach, especially for beginner and intermediate runners looking to improve and stay healthy in the sport.

I got this book with grand dreams of moving up!
    I confess I haven’t started running yet.
but here’s the reason I gave it 5 stars: this book makes sense to me. I’ve gone through it and really feel significantly better prepared to begin running for health and leisure. they way they explain the info is super helpful, yet not overwhelming. I really feel like I could begin these habits. so for now, i’m claiming that the weather has kept me indoors and the spring is coming soon. maybe.

  6. Chad Katoff (verified owner)

This is an excellent book that I would recommend to runners of all ability levels. I like the way it starts with the basics and builds from there, with clear and easy to follow directions. Jeff is an excellent coach and author and you can rely that what he says is well researched and tested with athletes of all levels.

  7. Bergs (verified owner)

I have used Jeff’s training information available on his website for years so when I got the chance to review an advance copy of this book I was stoked. Jeff is excellent at backing up every part of his training recommendations with research. For a nerd like me that is awesome, but I get it, not everyone is into that. What I liked about this book was that he judiciously adds information about the research studies. The chapters are arranged into digestible chunks that make sense. The strength training and stretching exercises are spot on. If only I had used more strength training when I returned to running several years ago, I could have prevented many of my injuries. Take a look at the video resources that are referenced in the book – they are a great additional value to this book. The training plans are excellent: there is something here for those just starting to run and those who have some experience already. Based on my own experience as a newer runner, if you follow the plan, you will run longer, faster, and most importantly stay injury free. To start running, all you need to do is just follow the plan… seriously, just follow it consistently and you will be amazed by the results.

  8. Jaime O. Lopez (verified owner)

This book is perfect for the person who is starting or restarting running. Drills in fundamentals to build a solid running foundation. The training plans help you build on that foundation.

  9. Jelena Sommer (verified owner)

This book will become your go-to companion if you want to make running an enjoyable part of your life.
There are lots of books on running out there so it’s very easy to get lost not knowing what to look for as a novice runner. Many running books are very technical and highly scientific which is great if you are a seasoned runner and a science lover. However if you are just started or maybe only thinking about taking up running as a part of a healthy lifestyle this book is all you need. Sure enough the author knows his stuff and he provides an extensive scientific base behind his recommendations but it’s presented in such an easy-to-understand way that even if you are new to running or not a scholar you wouldn’t feel intimidated. Not only will you learn a runner specific lingo but you’ll also understand why the workouts appear in a certain order and how to structure your weekly runs and additional exercises if you want to switch the workouts in the provided sample plans.
The book provides hands-on advice about every aspect of the running, from gear to different types of runs, but it’s biggest strength is it’s view on running as total body activity that doesn’t limit itself to the running sessions. Therefore strength training and stretches are regarded equally important as running if you want to enjoy running injury-free for many years to come. Those exercises don’t require gym membership or specific equipment and can be performed with your own body weight in the comfort of your home.
The easy to follow descriptions and accompanying pictures make it easy to understand and perform exercises without having an instructor on your side.
In the end you will get samples of six different running plans. You can start by learning to run and finish with your first marathon.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who is fascinated by the wonderful world of running and who wants to learn to run correctly and injury-free at any age.

I really liked reading this book. It was a fast read. Informative without preaching. I really like the running plans in the back—gives me something to break up the monotony of running on the treadmill for 3 miles. The plans in the back can work you up from being a novice to marathon runner through steady work. Four stars because the part that explains “how” to run seems kind of like I would need to “see” it and there are no illustrations or images there.

I was gifted this book by the publisher.

  11. Astrofan (verified owner)

First let me say that I was sent this book by the publisher with the expectation that I would give an honest review of its content. I am not a runner but with this book I could start a running program and know that I would be safe and successful in whatever my running goals might be. Speaking to friends who are runners, the author is big in the running community and highly recommended. Definitely a book to check out if you want to start running, train for your first or next running event, or challenge yourself with a new running program.

  12. Sherri (verified owner)

This book is easy to understand for someone like me who isn’t a runner but would like to be. I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for my review.

  13. Deidra P (verified owner)

Great book to get you started running the right way!
Running is easy, but running for a long duration, either in years or mileage, is a major challenge. This book provides great illustrations and simple, contextual advice for both experienced runners and aspiring runners.
I have been running for years and definitely benefitted from reading this book. I even printed some of the exercise routines that I hope to incorporate into my “runner’s longevity plan’.
I would’ve given this book 5 stars if there were exercise adaptations for [we] less flexible people and training plans for experienced marathoners. Recommend!!

  14. Val Hinsperger- Eganville Ontario Canada (verified owner)

This book is a fantastic resource for any runner – beginner to experienced. Jeff Gaudette has managed to put together a book that covers all aspects for those who want to run for a long time. What makes this book different from others I have read is the attention that is paid to the strength portion of the training. The illustrations and schedule that has been set out makes it manageable and easy for the athlete to understand and incorporate. I have been running for 40 years and finally i feel that i have a blueprint for my running and strength workouts. Thank you thank you for helping put this all together for those runners who take their running seriously.

  15. Amazeballs Book Addicts (verified owner)

I used to run a lot but it’s been along time and a bunch of kids later. I was looking for a book that would help me get back into running and this fit the bill. The author not only tells you how to stretch and strength workouts but also includes illustration of how to do them. I loved the illustrations. I read the whole book and was ready to run but the time I got to Chapter 9. Chapter 9 has the running plans. I wasn’t sure were to start with the plans so I’m currently doing the New Runners Training Plan to ease my way back into running and I’m happy with the way it’s going.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.

  16. Heytherebeautiful.stephanieb (verified owner)

This book is great for anyone who wants to start running, and also has great information for those who are seasoned runners. I love how Jeff laid out the book and the pictures are helpful as well. He starts by telling you why you should run and what you should wear. he then moves on to the fundamentals of running, techniques and workout ideas and then he includes training programs for beginners and ends with your first marathon running plan. Jeff talks about all of these in a way that is easy to understand and makes it interesting. I would highly recommend this book. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher.

  17. Matt Hertzfeldt (verified owner)

I used to run shorter distances quite a bit. After my kids were born running got put on the back burner. I loved how this book was broken down. It’s easy to read, has great stretches that are illustrated (which I love!) and has great tips. I’ve been focusing on my stretching more because of this book and have been amazed how much better I feel on my jogs now. I am using the 10K training plan in the back as we speak! Super helpful!

  18. Michele (verified owner)

This book contains so much useful information. Everything’s from posture, alignment and stride to technique drills, stretches, strengthen training and plans to put it all together. Includes easy to follow pictures and just generally laid out in an easy to use manner.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

  19. Mel (verified owner)

I am a nerd. Have been. Always will be, and even though this was a complimentary book from the publisher, I used it for something non-nerdy. I set a goal of completing several half marathons and this book is helping me train! Terminology? No longer baffling. Stretching? I’m not just standing at the start of my run and swinging my arms around self consciously hoping that what I’m doing constitutes ‘stretching’. Included are exercises for the rest of my body to build the strength that, what?, improves my form and reduces injuries. Finally, thank you! Thank you! Weekly plans to improved stamina and speed. Thanks Jeff Gaudette!

I so want to be a runner, but I haven’t ever been able to find my “stride” if you will. I was excited to read an advance copy of this! I am really appreciating all of the great tips and instruction.I especially loved the plans to help make me a runner. I am excited to be improving my skills as well. Everything is so well explained and in small enough chunks that even this novice can figure it out. I am so excited to continue on this journey!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, I am under no obligation to provide a review positive or otherwise.

What a great book to prepare a person to start running or improve their running skills!

Excellent instructions, guidelines, and even lists of what to buy and how to begin. I really like all of the charts, graphs, and illustrations as well!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to begin a running program or really organize a current running program. It’s a wonderful tool!

  22. Arielle Schwartz (verified owner)

What an enjoyable read, and I felt motivated by the colorful graphics, photos and drawings. I look forward to training for a 10k this year using the new runner’s training plan offered in this book. I used to feel overwhelmed, but this makes becoming a runner feel possible.

  23. Anna M S (verified owner)

I very clear guide to all aspects of running for novice and experienced runners with very clear instructions and pictures. Highly recommended.

  24. Pui(Sophia) (verified owner)

The book is nicely written. There are a lot of useful exercises, stretches, and training plans. The diagrams are easy to follow. And if you don’t know what an exercise is trying to say. They provide video references on the back of the book. This is a great resource for any runner wishing to go the extra mile.

  25. TCM62 (verified owner)

Such a simple, easy and straightforward book – except for the very serious and long time runner, this book can benefit everyone trying to get into running to trying to delve deeper into their running routines.

  26. Matt (verified owner)

This is a great book for beginners or seasoned runners as well. It has a lot of good explanations of different types of stretches and warm ups which are just as important to your plan as the run itself. The pages are thick and glossy, so the book is very durable. The plans are good for all levels of runners and there is something in here to help everyone whether it’s gait that you struggle with, or just mapping out how to make a plan that builds endurance, all of that is in here! It’s really an awesome resource.

  27. Jennifer Guerrero (verified owner)

This is a really neat running book. Overall, we found it to be very well organized, detailed, inspirational, and easy to follow. We found the illustrations and instructions for some of the stretches confusing, but he gives links to supplemental online content where he demonstrates in video format, which clarifies it easily.

I’m a recreational runner – about 30 miles a week, and my daughter’s in varsity cross country, and we both got something out of the book.

    The chapters are:
Part One: Before You Lace Up – health benefits and what to wear
Part Two: The Fundamentals – posture, alignment, stride, warm-up, recovery, and injury prevention
Part Three: Putting In the Work – technique drills, strength workouts, and types of runs
Part Four: Time to Train – running plans for: new runners, noncompetitive novices, noncompetitive intermediate, first 5K, first 10K, first half marathon, and first marathon

I’d recommend this to any runner or anyone who would like to learn to be a runner.

  28. LizardLvr (verified owner)

This book does not just provide a running plan, it also includes exercises and other information that will help your endurance and how you think about running. It is an easy read from start to finish or you can go directly to the information that you are seeking. This will become a running reference book when I prepare for my first 5k.

  29. Evin D. Blake (verified owner)

Got a review copy of this book as a member of the Callisto Publisher’s Club. I really like that it’s so informative and gets you to see running more than just an activity to go outside and do, but something that requires skill to do better to see better results. One of the small things I noticed and appreciated was how inclusive the book felt–it had an appeal to people from diverse backgrounds.

  30. WalkerGirl (verified owner)

I am impressed with the amount of information that the author included in this book. The illustrations are great and easy to follow. I have found this book to be very helpful and insightful. So many of my questions have been answered. I highly recommend this book!

  31. S. Iodice (verified owner)

Lost count how many times I’ve tried running and then quit. For me it’s not as easy as run/walk/run/walk until you build up endurance. I have always had questions about the whole process and workout routine, rest days, stretching, injuries, shoes, faster vs. farther, etc. Finally, I found a source for a discouraged wannabe jogger that explains and illustrates answers for how to get it done.

The publisher provided me with a free copy of the book, but I am under no obligation to give a possible review.

  32. Emilia (verified owner)

Anyone who follows this book to get into running will have a good, solid start to their journey. Personally, my favorite thing about the book is all the great running pictures—something about seeing seasoned runners doing their thing just makes me want to lace up my shoes and hit the pavement!

I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

  33. Dave G (verified owner)

Although I’ve been running for about a year, I never really understood the mechanics or how to do it right. This starts you at the very beginning, assuming nothing and then takes you to advanced levels. The training plans were half the book and extremely valuable.

In particular, the book has a ton of stretches and strengthening exercises to make you a better runner and prevent injury.

  34. Picky CO Mom (verified owner)

I get so overwhelmed by all of the exercise information out there that it almost paralyzes me into doing nothing. This book is actually a nice surprise. It has great charts and activities all laid for me, which I need to be effective. It shows you how to do strength exercises and how it helps with your running program. Overall, I find this to be a handy go to tool for someone getting back into fitness and running.

  35. AlexJouJou (verified owner)

Who is this book for? I would say the part that are plans is for a beginner runner. The reason is that the plans are cumulative – meaning each successive distance sort of assumes you’ve done the past one.

The strength and conditioning parts were very good – but I did find them confusing with so many different labels and options at times. I’m a marathoner who was looking for good strength plans and these do fit the bill but it can be tough to see how they fit into my training when I am not using his plans. The tips are helpful – and I do like the book is a bit larger without being full sheet of paper large so I can lay it down when I am working out.

I wish the strength routines had better clarity on exactly when they should be used that wasn’t all tied into the plans in the book, but otherwise this is a very solid book, easy to read, and the exercises and techniques are solid from my view as a runner who has run many marathons and shorter distances.

good book to have comes from years of experience and pain, many good tips on training and making plans. just go for it

  38. Blake Fraina (verified owner)

About 12 years ago, I was a daily moderate distance runner (5 – 8 miles). Running alone didn’t improve my times or distances, so I started combining it with strength and toning exercises which really made the difference. But over time my running became less frequent and a change of jobs five years ago has basically taken me out of the game entirely. I’ve made efforts to get back into it without much success. I got this book hoping that a bit of structure and professional guidance would help me get back into a regular running routine.

This really is a one stop shop for everyone from beginners to experienced runners. There are chapters in the beginning that cover running gear, alignment/posture, mastering your stride, technique drills and preventing injury. There’s also a host of stretching and strength training exercises specifically designed to improve all aspects of a runner’s form and ability. At the back are a series of training plans for every level of experience.

I’m currently quarantined at home (during the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak) and have started doing the no-nonsense strength work-outs so I can get back out on the road. I think this is just what I needed to inspire me and help focus my efforts. This is a great resource for anyone looking to start a running regimen, someone looking to get back into it or an experienced runner looking to improve their form, speed or distance.

If you are a beginner or have been running for years – this book is for you. I’m always looking for a book/magazine that will make running exciting to me, and I think Easy Running Plans by Jeff Gaudette is the answer to my wishes.

The book has four sections: Before You Lace Up, The Fundamentals, Putting in The Work, and Time to Train. The book also includes resources, references, and an index.

One of the things that stood out to me about this book was the workout section. It gives step by step instructions for the people that need that extra instruction to perform exercises the right way. I learned the hard way that you end up doing more damage to your body when you don’t have the correct posture.

Another very helpful thing in the book is the sample training plans. Instead of paying someone to give you a generic running training plan, this book will provide you with an efficient program that will help you reach your goals.

While I am not new to running, I definitely need to step up my game in terms of performance. The one thing that I was most excited for and has helped the most was the section on running fundamentals where they discuss your posture and alignment. Just following that small section alone and doing the recommended stretches made a huge difference in my very next run. All throughout the book there are numerous workout and stretches with clear illustrations and instructions.

After all of the “intro” information, they provide 7 sample plans starting off at beginners going to running your first marathon. Another thing I appreciated was that they created a running plan for noncompetitive beginner and intermediate runners because not everyone starts running to compete in marathons.

  43. Jijnasu Forever (verified owner)

With a sharp focus on editing, this is a no non-sense/frills book that delivers on what it is promising – running plans that will cater to any level of runner. As a “walker” slowly attempting to build stamina for running at least a half marathon in the next year or two – this book has provided an excellent roadmap. It not only focuses on training plans and strength training, but provides enough tips on clothes/shoes etc. Using a connected shoe (yes, an overkill) I am using an app from an athletic brand that helps me monitor my progress using these lessons. Overall, a wonderful resource. If I dont get to run my half marathon, it is not because I didnt have the right information or training plan – that excuse is now off the list.

I enjoy running and in my normal weekly routine I would run a few times a week anywhere from 3 miles to 7 miles in hopes of gaining distance. I had never followed a plan before, I just went and did what I could. I wish I had consulted a book like this in the beginning. It is so essential to have a game plan rather than just think you know what you’re doing. This book starts with the basics of what gear you need and factors to consider like your posture and stride. These factors can make such a difference in the efficiency of your run! I like that the book has great visuals for stretches and strength-building exercises. It also gives tips on what to do for different injuries. What I love best is at the end there are sample training plans. There is a new runner’s plan and a plan for distances 5K to a marathon. I had never used a plan before, but this has been a great way for me to have a plan to meet a specific goal. I personally have found great improvements in how my body feels after runs and I have more easily met my goals. I highly recommend this book for the simplicity of necessary content for any runner.

  45. ATK Baas (verified owner)

I’ve been an on-and-off runner for the better part of a decade. I’ve made pretty much all of the mistakes: too much too fast, too far too often, not stretching. I have never been seriously injured, though I’ve often gotten shin splints and sore knees. I did a half marathon four years ago and it didn’t go well. I’ve never consistently run a sub-9 minute mile.

So, I’m a beginner and this book has been awesome. The author explains all the basics of running, breaking down concepts like “stride” and “alignment” into usable concepts. He starts with form, then dives into the drills, exercises, and types of runs. The drills and exercises have full color illustrations to explain how to do them, which has been helpful. It takes a few times, but you get them down pretty quick.

The last chapter has a bunch of different running plans scheduled out over 8 to 10 weeks. It breaks down each day, laying out whether you run or rest, how long and what type of run you do, the strength exercise, and the stretching. The strength exercises focus on different muscle groups and are pretty effective, I think. The focus for early runs definitely seems slow, but I’ve already seen improvement over the last three weeks.

Overall, the book is a great introduction for people who have been interested in running but never got serious about it. I’m not an expert runner, so I can’t comment on whether it works for them.

After many years of training to run marathons and half marathons, I got burnt out and stopped for the last two years. I needed a book that would motivate me and give me a different perspective on my training and nutrition. This is so well written with much information without being overwhelming. Each chapter is divided into what you need to know. There is no need to read it cover to cover to find what you are looking for. It is a wonderful tool to have even if you don’t train for races but simply want to get healthy.

I’ve had problems with shin pain whilst running for a long time. My physio recommended doing strength training exercises alongside increasing my distance gradually. But I wasn’t sure exactly what to do, so I bought this book.

I love it! It has a straightforward, direct and common sense approach. I’ve been doing the beginner’s running plan for 7 weeks now, and I’ve been running pain-free. Each plan includes strength exercises, stretches and running drills and is definitely structured in a way that helps maximise use of your time.

I’m very busy and have a 15 month old and still am able to fit in my exercise. I credit this book with helping me to keep going with my running.

  49. Succinct Reviews (verified owner)

This book is a great starting point for novices, but can also be useful for more experienced runners. It covers all the basics like running gear, form, and training plans for those starting out to more experienced runners. Although experienced runners won’t need most of the information. I liked it and found easy to understand and helpful.

Great starter guide for a new runner. I’m 70yo and just started running a couple years ago. Instructions here help in warm up and challenges as you progress/

My husband and I are runners who have recently gotten back into the hobby during quarantine as a way to stay in shape and get out of the house! My husband has read this book cover to cover and he’s learned a lot which he’s shared with me. Most surprising to me was the part about proper breathing – because I had been taught differently, but I’ve made some adjustments and it’s helped!
Good book if you have the time!

My adult grandson asked for a book to help him in his new sport of running. He rated the book highly saying it gave him plenty of tips to improve his performance and personal goals. He doesn’t want to compete but the book gave him personal running goals and is helping him map his running plans and meet his goals. He spoke quite highly of this book.

I’m 2 weeks in to the novices plan and have already seen some improvements with my running. I’m prone to injury when running, so the strength training and stretching has been extremely helpful. I haven’t had any pain running since starting this.
